Steadfast & True Book Club
Emily Davidson Nemoy
I grew up on 115+ acres of land, on what was once a working tobacco farm that belonged to my grandparents. I had two dogs, one cat, an older brother, no visible neighbors, no internet or cable television and a lot of time on my hands. We went to the public library often, and it was always a big deal to me to pick out something to read on my own. In forming a yogi book club, I’m hoping to merge my love of reading with my passion for yoga, provoking discussion on themes related to mindful living.
In Silence, in the Age of Noise, Erling Kagge examines silence and recounts his own experiences as an explorer. Kagge is the first man to have completed the Three Poles Challenge—the North Pole, the South Pole and the summit of Mount Everest. He spent fifty days walking solo across Antarctica, becoming the first person to reach the South Pole alone. But his book isn’t about exploration. It’s about silence in its many variations—within us, around us and the silence we must learn to create. “Nature spoke to me in the guise of silence,” Kagge writes. “The quieter I became, the more I heard.”
As a yoga teacher, when you talk too much, you risk ruining students’ opportunity for self-reflection. The same is true about everyday life. There are consequences to living in an overstimulated society. I want to talk about them and this book with you.
